People-centred projects: SunSource Energy's values in action

At SunSource Energy, any project that stands tall today is not bricks and mortar, but its people. We live our values of putting people at the heart of what we do, every day, in every project.

Contractors play a key role in any project, and their health and safety performance is of utmost priority for us. Therefore, it is essential to manage contractors well and ensure they follow the health and safety goals and standards of SunSource Energy. It is crucial for us to involve them in all health and safety activities to achieve our goal of “Zero Incident, Every Day”.

To put things in perspective, a 100MW project would require an average workforce of 320 a day, and ensuring every one of them reaches home safely is our dictum.

From contractor selection to mobilisation, we always prioritise health and safety requirements. Contractor meetings, toolbox training, as well as work permits, safety inductions, safety training, safety committee meetings, motivation programmes, contractor evaluations, and many other activities ensure greater participation and engagement of contractor workers. All these activities help us to create a better and safer workplace.

To ensure that contractors are aligned with the vision of SHV Energy and SunSource Energy, we have defined a five-step process that enables us to choose partners who share our values and are compliant with our procedures.

Contractor Selection – This step requires a pre-qualification form duly completed by the contractor, and if we are satisfied, we hold discussions on health and safety aspects, followed by due diligence performed by our teams. We also announce whether a contractor is selected or rejected.

Contractor Onboarding – If selected, the contractor is provided with defined EHS requirements, followed by mobilisation to respective sites.

Contractor Skill Development – To ensure that workers are duly aligned with our goals and objectives, various routine activities such as toolbox training, safety checklists training, meetings, and motivational programmes are carried out. Days of significance like National Safety Week, SHV Health & Safety Week, Road Safety Week, Environment Day, etc., are also celebrated, bringing them together to motivate them to become health and safety leaders.

Contractor Monitoring – While we run various regular activities, monitoring routine work and ensuring zero fatalities or any lapses becomes a key aspect. Using tools like EcoOnline, site leadership tours, site audits, and safety observation tours, we ensure that health and safety at our sites is never compromised.

Contractor Evaluation – The evaluation of contractors is accomplished by applying set and defined criteria, ensuring the minimum qualification of contractors required to support the project on-site, thereby enhancing their work culture around health and safety.

Having implemented an efficient contractor management framework in line with our health and safety initiatives, we are currently at 3.5 million safe man-hours and counting.

We display our core purpose, “Courage to care for generations to come”, by ensuring that our people return home safely every day, having learnt new skills and knowledge to improve their lives in a sustainable way.
